PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an erroneous detection of 'battery run down' from occurring due to a battery voltage drop caused by printing. SOLUTION: A control section 3 reads an ambient temperature from an ambient temperature detector 5 when it receives a 'start printing' command or the power is turned on. The number N of dots that can be printed simultaneously (maximum number of dots to be printed simultaneously) is fixed from the read ambient temperature T. To fix the maximum number N of dots that are printed simultaneously from the ambient temperature T, the relation of the ambient temperature T with the impedance Z of a battery is obtained by experiment, a permissible voltage drop at a certain temperature To is fixed, a permissible electric charge from the impedance Zo at the temperature To is obtained, and the maximum number No of dots that are printed simultaneously at the temperature To is fixed from an electric charge per dot.
